Max Sher

Born in St. Petersburg (then Leningrad), raised in Siberia and educated in Siberia and France, Max Sher started out as photojournalist and then moved on into art photography and installation art, still also doing assignments for international print and online media. Sher is primarily interested in the representation of post-Soviet cultural landscape and histories. He now works in photography, installation, and video, and also produces books and zines. His work, personal and commissioned, was exhibited both at home and internationally and has appeared in The Guardian, The New York Times Magazine, Der Spiegel, Bloomberg Businessweek, Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, Monocle, Le Monde, Libération, Financial Times Weekend, Courrier International, etc. as well as in photography and art publications including Foto8, GUP, Fraction, Prism, Iskusstvo – The Art Magazine, DI – Dialog of Arts, Flak Photo, etc. Sher is the author of three photo books: A Remote Barely Audible Evening Waltz, Treemedia Publishers, 2013, Palimpsests, completing the eponymous 7-year project, Ad Marginem Press, with the support of Heinrich Böll Foundation, 2018, 245 Khrushchev Housing Entrances, self-published, 2018, 2019.
