Department of Research Arts, Prometheus Studio and NII × Alpbau present an exhibition project PROMETHEUS. DEMO: Experiment Promises to Become Art that will open a series of artistic research ARCHIVE.RESEARCH

The exhibition will take place at NII × Alpbau space and will include archival media materials, video artworks and installations telling about the activities of a student design office Prometheus that emerged in 1962 at the Faculty of Radio Engineering at Kazan Aviation University (KAI). Under the direction of Professor of Physics and Aesthetics Bulat Galeyev, it later became a research institute for experimental aesthetics, which undertook projects on colour music in the sphere of art, architecture, design and other applied fields. Members of the Prometheus group were the first in the Soviet Union to start experimenting with video, thus, they may be considered as pioneers of contemporary media art.

The exhibition shows the history of Prometheus Institute through a series of documentaries, television recordings and various materials on designing colour musicalinstruments. The exhibition consists of iconic works of the group, such asinstallations, video art and other recognizable objects within the context of contemporary art as well as relatively unknown projects and artifacts, for instance, their experimental studies on urban architecture and interior design. Each object represents one study program of the Institute.

The activities of the Institute remain insufficiently explored. PROMETHEUS. DEMO outlines possible ways to future art historic, cultural and media archeological research of the studio’s archive. Exhibition focuses on the experience of young engineers and artists, which is seen today as an unbelievable, fantastic and even utopic. Despite the general recognition of their contribution to the development of the Russian video art, the question whether their experiments and research belong to the artistic realm or to the scientific field is still relevant. The question brings forth the position of Institute’s members themselves: being a part of the technical institute they published in art magazines, proposed aesthetic solutions for interior design and urban environment and visited the conferences on media art.
